Description:
Want to learn the basics of quilting, join Michelle and Maureen for Watergirl Quilt Co’s Learn to Quilt – 2026 Summer class where you will make a stroller / lap quilt; finishing approximately 30” x 30”) from start (fabric selection, cutting) to finish (quilting, binding).
You will start with an introductory recording (approximately 20 minutes) that will be sent to you upon registration. Michelle; quilter and owner of Watergirl Quilt Co will go over some quilting’s corner stone information (what is a quilt, choosing fabrics (colour values, tools, resources), supply list, tools, sewing machines, thread, needles, whether to prewash or not to prewash your fabrics?)
The next 3 “in person” classes (18 hours in total) with Maureen will be in our classroom at Watergirl Quilt Co at 235 Water Street in Prescott, Ontario.

- how to choose your fabric
- rotary cutting
- half square triangles (using Studio 180 – Tucker Trimmer and Magic Wand)
- accurate piecing skills
- pressing vs ironing
- squaring up / pinning / gluing
- sandwich a quilt / quilting / binding

Fabrics Requirement:
6 fabrics are required for your Learn to Quilt project. They range in colour value from dark, medium and light. Plus a pop of colour
We suggest you select your fabrics after watching the 20 minute introductory recording where Michelle will be covering how to select fabrics and show you how to use a Gray Scale Finder Tool (available for purchase; while supplies last).
You are welcome to use fabrics from home or purchase at Watergirl Quilt Co. or a combination of the both. The staff at Watergirl Quilt Co. would be happy to help you with your selections.

Sewing and Quilting supplies
- rotary cutter
- cutting mat (you will have use of one in the classroom)
- seam ripper
- straight pins; such as
- long quilting ruler 6 1/2” " x 24" or wider is recommended, but smaller rulers can be used
- scissors / snips for clipping threads
- thread 50wt cotton thread for piecing
- basting pins
- Tucker Timmer I (up to 12½”) or Pint size Tucker Trimmer (up to 6 ½”)
Sewing Machine
- bring your machine
- walking foot
- ¼” foot (if available) – you can always bring all your feet
- user guide / manual; it is always good to bring your user guide / manual in case
you run into any problems.
- pedals, power cords, presser feet
Machine rentals
Don't feel like bringing your machine with you? Rental machines are available (limited quantity). For a one time fee of $50 you may rent a BERNINA 475 to use in our classroom for the duration of the Learn to Quilt classes. Please contact our store directly to make the necessary arrangements.
In our classroom at Watergirl Quilt Co
You will be able to enjoy the use of our:
- tables; sit / stand mechanical raise and lower
- chairs NOTE: for added comfort bring a seat cushion.
- iron and ironing boards
- cutting mats on large table for cutting

Complimentary
Coffee and tea will be available in our kitchenette. Please bring a travel mug or sealed cup to avoid any spillage. Tap water is drinkable.
Lunch
“In person” classes will have a 30 minute lunch (food not included) break. You may use our microwave.
NOTE: our fridge space is limited, so we suggest you make use of a thermal lunch bag if you bring any of your own food / snacks.
