Description:

 

Sewing skills and BERNINA feet; what a great combination!

 

This course will be exploring how to use (class related) BERNINA feet while learning / upgrading your skills for sewing curves, decorative stitches, gathering & making ruffles, couching, button holes, piping & flanges, pintucks and using twin needles.

 

NOTE: The Instructor will be demonstrating using only BERNINA products.

 

All machine brands are welcome.

 

Disclaimer: Instructor only has knowledge of BERNINA products.  Participants of other brands will need to source the equivalent feet for their brand and machine model.

 

 

By the end of this course you will leave with a finished project that would make a great wall hanging, table topper, etc.

Pattern / Reference Material(s): 

A class handout; includes pattern and template will be provided at the beginning of the first class.

 

Fabric Requirement:

1 m or 1 ¼ yard          - light fabric (gray in sample)

1 m or 1 ¼ yard          - medium fabric (teal in sample)

1.25 m or 1 ½ yard     - dark fabric (black in sample)

Backing                       - enough to fit finished top - to fit finished top of 28” x 36 ½”

Binding                        - 4 strips of desired width

Batting                         - to fit finished top of 28” x 36 ½”

BERNINA Feet (required)   

Over the 5 sessions, your Instructor will cover the following “required” BERNINA feet. 

1.       # 37 / 37D / 57 / 57D / 97 / 97D - ¼” patchwork foot matching your machine (only one foot is required – your preference)

2.       # 20 / 20C / 20D - open toe embroidery foot matching your machine (only one foot is required – your preference)

# 3A / 3B

3.     # 31 pintuck foot; with 5 grooves

# 46C pintuck foot & decorative stitch & other optional pintuck feet

(Pintuck apparatus recommended for 990 owners)

4.     # 64 straight stich 4 mm hemmer foot

5.     # 16 - 5 mm gathering *** “narrow” for 5.5 mm machines OR # 16 – 9 mm gather *** “wide” for 9.0 mm machines (only one foot is required – your preference)

Ruffler foot (7/8 Series) (optional) – will be demonstrated

6.     # 83 circular embroidery attachment

7.       # 12 / 12C bulky overlock foot (only one foot is required – your preference)

# 38 piping foot

# 21 braiding foot

# 22 cording foot; with 3 grooves

 

Required Notions 

-         Twin Needle (1.2 for 5.5 mm machine or 2.0 for 9.0 machine) - will be available by start of class

-        Microtex Needle 80 / 12

-        Ruler

-        Rotary Cutter

-        Scissors; fine point and sharp

-        505 Adhesive Spray

-        Stabilizer – 1 ½ m or 1 ¾ yd. Pellon 806 Stitch and Tear OR OESD Ultra Clear & Tear

-        Stabilizer – 0.25 m or 10 in. Pellon SF101 Shape Flex OR OESD Fusible Woven

-        marking pen – colour that is visible on your fabric; such as Frixion pens

-        chalk pencil for dark fabric; white chalk pen

-        Thread; 3 -4 colours to highlight fabrics

o    8 wt Wonderfil Razzle / Dazzle - will be available by start of class

o   Polyester; with a sheen (Watergirl stocks the brands; Mettler, Isacord and Madeira)

o   All purpose threads to match polyester and 8 wt colours (Watergirl stocks brands; Valdani, Aurifil, Wonderfil and Trailhead)

-        Extra bobbins (required for bobbin work in session 3) matching your machine

-        ½” - 5/8” wide ribbons

-        Decorative braids or cording

-        Susan Cleaveland – Piping Hot Binding Ruler – back ordered - should be available by start of class

 

Sewing and Quilting supplies:

Bring any other of your sewing / quilting supplies such as:

-        Scissors / snips

-        pins; Clover fine pins are recommended 

-       28 mm rotary cutter and replacement blades.  You will essentially

        be cutting through a quilt, so this is a good time to start with a fresh blade

-       Tailor’s ham (optional)

 

Sewing Machine (what to bring):

-        your machine

-        user guide / manual; it is always good to bring in case you run into any problems

 

Machine Rentals: 

Don’t feel like bringing your machine with you?  Rental machines are available (limited quantities).  Please contact the store directly to confirm current pricing and make arrangements.

Machine rentals are subject to availability -

you might not have the same machine for all classes.

 

You must bring your own feet.

Watergirl will not be loaning out feet with machine rentals.

 

 

 

In our classroom at Watergirl Quilt Co.

You will be able to enjoy the use of our:

-        workstation tables; sit / stand, raise & lower mechanical

-        chairs    NOTE: for added comfort, bring a seat cushion

-        cutting mat at your work station

-        cutting mats on large table

-        2 - 3 irons and ironing boards

 

Complimentary

Coffee and tea will be available in our kitchenette.  Please bring a travel mug or sealed cup to avoid any spillage.  Tap water in our classroom is drinkable.
